Director of Programs and Grant Development

General Description: The Director of Programs and Grant Development performs professional work to advance the goals of California State PTA, with an emphasis on securing, leading and advancing non-dues revenue in the areas of programs and grants. This work includes developing and implementing a nonprofit business model to enhance delivery of the School Smarts Parent Engagement Program to an expanding number of school sites throughout California. Additionally, this position is responsible for development and oversight of a comprehensive grant development program on behalf of the association including developing proposals, implementation and reporting requirements. The position reports to the Executive Director and works closely Board of Directors, volunteer commissions and committees as well as with all staff and external partners including school district and school administrators and consultants.

Classification: This position is classified on the exempt salary schedule as a Director.

Salary Range: $62,500 to $86,000

Essential Functions:

  • Under the general direction of the Executive Director, oversees and manages day-to-day School Smarts program activities, including developing plans and models for effective delivery and expansion; training content and delivery, timelines and deliverables, budgeting, personnel and consultant coordination and management, marketing, fundraising, training, communications and public relations, and other aspects.
  • Works closely with the Executive Director, School Smarts Committee, Special Committee for Arts Education, Family Engagement Commission and other volunteer-led bodies within the state PTA leadership to initiate and coordinate strategies to advance the program objectives, including those set forth in the grant.
  • Develops and implements outreach efforts to expand awareness about the program.
  • Identifies, develops and maintains partnerships with educators and staff in school districts and school sites to facilitate participation in School Smarts and to advise them in enhancing their overall family engagement efforts.
  • Strengthens support for PTA leaders at all levels to foster family engagement activities and implement School Smarts.
  • Develops plans and ensures that data is maintained, compiled and analyzed to regularly monitor progress towards program indicators and targets; prepares periodic progress reports and summaries.
  • Assists, collaborates with, and leads project team members at the state and local levels, including PTA leaders, educators, communities and partner groups in organizing and providing trainings and outreach activities related to the program.
  • Identifies and implements strategies for expanding the reach of the program through various modes; facilitates communications with multiple audiences; promotes diversity and inclusion to maximize broad participation.
  • Serves as a policy advisor to the association on family and community engagement strategies including those related to LCFF-LCAP. Assists in building and maintaining relationships with PTA leaders, educators, community groups, arts groups, policymakers and other key decision makers that have impacts on family engagement, education and arts issues.
  • Develops, oversees and monitors a comprehensive grant development plan that is aligned with PTA’s mission and goals.
  • Researches, develops and carries out grant development strategies that lead to increased funding for PTA programs and activities.
  • Leads an internal team for grant application submission, evaluation and reporting as they relate to the development function.
  • Lead grant writing and reporting activities; manage grant process to develop accurate timelines; work with appropriate staff to ensure timely proposal production and oversee the fulfillment of the terms of funded projects.
  • Communicates with grant managers on behalf of the association.
  • Conducts in person and conference call presentations; represents the association at meetings and events, as requested.
  • Successfully monitors feedback to identify and resolve problems and meet program needs; and identifies and develops new products and services that enrich the program.
  • Writes and edits articles, reports, summaries, background papers, key messages and other materials; prepares materials for the website and social media.
  • Manages staff to help ensure consistent, high quality work aligned to the association’s goals. Establishes work schedules and priorities, provides training and coaching, gives direction and guidance, ensures adherence to all employee policies, and conducts annual performance evaluations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least five years of people management experience
  • Experience managing fee-for-service, business delivery systems
  • Non-profit experience
  • Budgeting and budget management experience
  • Experience with public school districts and understanding of the public school education system
  • Connections with public school districts highly beneficial
  • Bachelor’s degree

Working conditions/Physical demands:

  • Some travel required.
