Make it Count: Math Standards

Math is incredibly important in our lives and, without realizing it, we use mathematical concepts, as well as the skills we learn from doing math problems every day. The laws of mathematics govern everything around us, and without a good understanding of them, one can encounter significant difficulties in life. All students need a high-quality mathematics program designed to prepare them to graduate from high school ready for college and careers.

In 2013, California updated the academic standards for Math. The standards call for learning mathematical content in the context of real-world situations, using mathematics to solve problems and developing “habits of mind” that foster mastery of mathematics content as well as mathematical understanding. The standards for kindergarten through grade 8 prepare students for higher mathematics. The standards for higher mathematics reflect the knowledge and skills that are necessary to prepare students for college and careers and productive citizenship.
