May 2021 Monthly Focus: Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. PTA is dedicated to expanding mental-health supports and services for our kids. As parents, we know what it takes to keep a child physically healthy — nutritious food, exercise, immunizations — but the basics for good mental health aren’t always as clear. The first “basic” is to know that children’s mental health matters. We need to treat a child’s mental health just like we do their physical health, by giving it thought and attention and, when needed, professional help.

If you suspect that someone you care about is struggling with depression, anxiety, or mental health challenges, the best thing you can do is speak up and let them know they are not alone!
Stigma around mental health is one of the primary barriers to people seeking and receiving treatment.  It also prevents parents from getting help for their kids.  The average delay between onset of mental illness symptoms and treatment is 11 years.  Let’s work together to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health.
We pass along messages about mental illness to our children in small ways every day.  Raise them to be aware, compassionate and accepting.  Luckily, parents and families can do a lot to help create healthy environments that support mental health in our kids!
DYK? 50% of us will experience a mental health challenge in our lifetime.  Learning about mental health will help you understand that those that struggle are still a lot like you – just on a journey in different shoes.
Having a mental illness changes how you think, feel or act and can make it harder to do the things you want to do.  Just like when your body is sick, you should be able to seek help without fear of stigma.  Everyone can help break down stigma by learning and sharing the truth about mental health.
DYK? Half of all mental disorders start by age 14! A parent’s role is critical in early identification, getting access to help and treatment for mental illness.  Mental disorders in children are treatable; early identification and treatment help children reach their full potential. Children’s mental health matters!
Depression is more than “normal” teen moodiness, it is a medical condition that interferes with a child’s life and may have long-lasting symptoms. Mental health matters, and treatment is essential.
Want to be #Stigmafree? Use respectful language to talk about mental health conditions, challenge misconceptions when you see or hear them, see the person, not the illness and offer support if you think someone is having trouble.
Happy Mental Health Month! We’ve all been through a lot lately. As we continue to persevere, let’s find joy in making our mental health a priority.
We all experience emotional ups and downs from time to time caused by events in our lives. Mental health conditions go beyond these emotional swings and are longer lasting. They are medical conditions that cause changes in how we think and feel and in our mood. They are not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing. Let’s work together to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Volunteer Appreciation Month gives us a chance to recognize all of the amazing parents and caregivers who have volunteered to help #AllChildren. Join us in appreciating families for all they’ve done to support our school this year.
Our teachers have done so much this year to keep our kids learning, take a moment to share your appreciation with your child’s teacher with a quick note or email.
School counselors have worked hard to support student mental health during distance and hybrid learning.  Let’s appreciate their efforts and continue to advocate for social emotional learning to be integrated into our schools.
Your PTA leaders have worked hard to keep our parents connected to the school this year, despite all of the unique challenges.  Take a moment to appreciate your PTA executive board members and chairs to acknowledge their service this year.  DYK? You can honor them with a PTA Honorary Service Award or by asking your local city government to make them a certificate.
Our school administrators have shown up to our schools every day this year to keep things on track.  They have supported our teachers, helped our parents stay connected, and been the cheerleaders for our students.  We appreciate all they have done!
Students have been so resilient this year- adjusting to every twist and turn that has occurred in education.  We appreciate our students– we know that they often don’t get recognition, but we want to take a moment to acknowledge their amazing efforts this year!
Our instructional aides continue to provide students with excellent support in virtual, hybrid and in-person instruction.  We are so appreciative of how they help our students get the assistance they need to succeed.
The office staff have continued to work hard all year- answering calls, keeping teachers supplied with things they need, and doing critical paperwork for our campus.  Our school appreciates all that they do for our school, our teachers and our students.
School nurses have kept our kids safe and given families important information during this school year.  We salute and appreciate all that they do at our school.
Custodians and Groundskeepers have had to learn new cleaning techniques and adapt to new schedules this year.  We appreciate everything they do to keep our campuses clean and beautiful today and every day!
District officials have been given the challenging task this year of working with ever changing regulations and policies.  Our school is appreciative of their willingness to listen to our parents, to keep us updated on the latest news, and the care they have shown for all students and families in our district.
Our school librarians foster a love of reading in our students each and every day.  We appreciate all that they do for our school.

February 2021 Monthly Focus: Family Engagement

This month we celebrate 124 years of PTA on Founders’ Day, February 17, 2021. Family Engagement is the foundation of what we do in PTA. In California, with the creation of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) authentic family engagement in schools is now acknowledged as vital for school improvement and student achievement.

PTA is part of the fabric of the United States’ public-education system and a trusted partner to millions of parents, families, educators and community members. PTA is the largest family engagement group in the country. For over 124 years we  advocate for education, welfare, health and safety of all children.
Authentic family-school partnerships equals academic improvement. It’s a powerful strategy for achieving whole-school goals, such as reading at grade level, closing achievement gaps and motivating students for long-term success.
School is better when families are active participants in the life of the school, and feel welcomed, valued and connected to each other, to school staff and to what students are learning and doing in class.
Successful schools ensure families are empowered to be advocates for their own and other children, to ensure that students are treated fairly and have access to learning opportunities that will support their achievement.
When families and school staff engage in regular, two-way, meaningful communication about student learning, #AllChildren win.
Families and caregivers are a child’s first teacher.  When they become partners with the school they foster success by creating a culture of authentic engagement in school life. Keeping kids focused on school readiness, learning and homework shows commitment to our children’s academic growth and development.
Teachers and administrators can strengthen efforts by involving families in two-way,  regular and meaningful conversations about students, giving parents good information about supporting our children and how grade-level expectations affect kids’ academic progress.
PTA has partnered with education leaders to develop our National Standards for Family-School Partnerships. These research-based blueprints make it easy and effective for families, educators and community members to work toward our shared goals. https://capta.org/resource/family-school-partnerships/
DYK? The new Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) actually requires school districts to involve parents and caregivers in planning and decision-making to improve local schools thanks, in part, to the advocacy efforts of the California State PTA.

January 2021 Monthly Focus: Advocating for #AllChildren

Over the 120 years that PTA has been in existence we have helped to make major strides for the well-being of children and families across the United States. This month our focus is on these accomplishments from the 1900’s to the present day. The advocacy that PTA does is one of the cornerstones of our organization and our accomplishments should be celebrated. If your unit has done something to advocate for children and families in your local community – take this month to share that information out to the world. Toot your own horn, and let parents and community members see your relevance and importance so that they may join your PTA and help you continue the legacy of our organization.

In 1899, PTA urged lawmakers to create a separate juvenile court and probation system for children by passing a resolution to protect children from being incarcerated with adults. Today, PTA members continue to advocate for #allchildren.
In the 1900s PTA members advocated for the creation of child labor laws, allowing children to attend school. From the 1920s through the 1950’s PTA helped enact labor laws ranging from minimum employee age requirements to the minimum wage – still in effect today.
At the first National Congress of Mothers Convocation in 1897, public kindergarten classes and the establishment of daycare centers were two key topics.  PTA members continued to focus their advocacy on early childhood education and kindergarten throughout the 20th century. Now over 3.8 million students enroll in kindergarten each year.
Among our earliest advocacy efforts, PTA  called for the establishment of a national public health bureau to stem the tide of child mortality caused by childhood illnesses such as measles, whooping cough, and diphtheria. Parent advocacy was rewarded with the  establishment of the U.S. Public Health Service in 1913.
As early as the 1920s, PTAs were responsible for expanding school lunch programs. So by the time the 1946 National School Lunch Act, which provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children, PTA advocates had been working to improve school nutrition for decades.
During the 1960’s PTA worked with the National Council of JuvenileCourt Judges to make the court system more responsive to the needs of at-risk youth. Today, PTA continues to advocate for #allchildren and youth.
Since 1974 PTA members have advocated to protect the rights and meet the needs of students with disabilities. In the decades since, PTA continues to advocate to improve and expand educational opportunities for students with special needs in ADA, IDEA and beyond.
Did you know? PTA members have advocated to protect children from advertisements for decades. First in 1934 for creation of the Federal Communications Commission Act and again in 1990 for the Children’s Television Act. Today, as technology advances, so have PTA’s efforts to protect children from negative influences and ensuring their privacy and personal info is secure.
In the early 2000’s PTA led the charge to include family engagement language in the education law, No Child Left Behind Act. Because of the advocacy efforts of PTA members the federal law governing K-12 education has continued to include strong family engagement policies and programs.
Research demonstrates that when schools practice authentic family engagement, absenteeism is reduced, dropout rates decrease and student achievement and graduation rates go up. In 2018 California State PTA sponsored AB2878, a bill that clearly defined Family Engagement criteria as part of the Priority 3 of California’s  Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) for schools throughout the state.
In 2019 California State PTA was a sponsor of California’s legislation, SB328, the Late School Start bill. The bill addressed a known public health risk (as defined by American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC) by providing later school start times that are aligned with the biological sleep needs of middle and high school students.
California State PTA believes that the arts are an integral part of a comprehensive curriculum. Over the past 20 years we have sponsored legislation to bring arts back into schools, created a School Smarts parent education program that uses the arts as a teaching tool, and we have joined forces with CreateCA on a public will campaign to raise awareness around the arts. We have also published a guide to the Visual and Performing Arts Standards to help parents understand the five genres of art and what their children should learn in each grade.

In 1899, PTA urged lawmakers to create a separate juvenile court and probation system for children by passing a resolution to protect children from being incarcerated with adults. Today, PTA members continue to advocate for #allchildren. #PTAadvocacy #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy
In the 1900s PTA members advocated for the creation of child labor laws, allowing children to attend school. From the 1920s through the 1950’s PTA helped enact labor laws ranging from minimum employee age requirements to the minimum wage – still in effect today.  #AllChildren #PTAadvocacy #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy
#AllChildren #PTAadvocacy #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy
#AllChildren #PTAadvocacy  #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy
As early as the 1920s, PTAs were responsible for expanding school lunch programs. So by the time the 1946 National School Lunch Act, which provides nutritionally balanced, low-cost or free lunches to children, PTA advocates had been working to improve school nutrition for decades. #AllChildren #PTAadvocacy #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy
During the 1960’s PTA worked with the National Council of JuvenileCourt Judges to make the court system more responsive to the needs of at-risk youth. Today, PTA continues to advocate for #allchildren and youth. #AllChildren #PTAadvocacy  #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy
Since 1974 PTA members have advocated to protect the rights and meet the needs of students with disabilities. In the decades since, PTA continues to advocate to improve and expand educational opportunities for students with special needs in ADA, IDEA and beyond. #AllChildren #PTAadvocacy #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy
#AllChildren #PTAadvocacy  #PTALegacyOfAdvocacy

November 2020 Monthly Focus: Thankful for Our Volunteers

The heart of PTA is the amazing men, women, children, teachers, community members, grandparents, and friends who power the PTA. Every level of PTA from the unit advocacy chair all the way to the National PTA President is filled by non-paid volunteers who support the mission of the PTA and want a better world for #allchildren. This month we want to focus on you and all the good that volunteers like you do (and have done for over 120 years).

We’ve developed a series of posts and images that you can use around the November theme: Thankful for our Volunteers. Use of the California State PTA Social Media kit is optional and fully customizable, so we hope you will find it useful.

Parents and caregivers at our school have given over ________ hours of service last year to make our school better. We are thankful for so many volunteers who improve the lives of children in our community. Note: Use your Annual Historian Report to get those numbers
Did you know that PTA positions from the room parent chair all the way to the National PTA President are filled by non-paid volunteers? We are thankful for each and every volunteer who has made a difference in the lives of children.
In this year when it’s so easy to feel isolated, joining PTA can help you feel connected to a larger group in your community — a group with a proud 123-year history. We are thankful for every single volunteer PTA member today and always. #PTA4kids
Our adult volunteers are not the only ones doing great things for their school. We want to recognize all of the students who also volunteer their time serving the PTA/PTSA. Students benefit from volunteering. Studies show that when our students volunteer it helps their self-esteem and self-confidence. We are thankful for our students who volunteer their time and talents to the PTA.
As if you needed one more reason to volunteer your time with the PTA — did you know that people who give their time to others might benefit from lower blood pressure, a longer lifespan, and improved mental health? Those good feelings we get from helping kids in our communities can also lead to lower levels of stress, depression and anxiety. We give thanks for every PTA volunteer and wish you health and happiness in this season of gratitude.
Volunteering gives you a sense of purpose. California State PTAs mission is to positively impact the lives of children and families and our volunteers turn that mission into reality!  There is still more work to do, so we invite you to join us ____.  We give thanks for all of our members — whether they live locally or far away. Note: insert your membership link

September 2020 Monthly Focus: Spotlight on the Arts

Even in this new world of distance learning, schools must provide students with a full curriculum — and a full curriculum includes the arts. California law specifies that the arts should include instruction (in grades 1-6) or courses (in grades 7-12) in four disciplines: dance, drama and theater, music, and visual arts.

Fall is Reflections season!  Take this opportunity to share with our families what exactly this PTA arts program is, how to enter, and the benefits of participation.  Also this can be a great springboard to encourage your school families to advocate for more arts programming at your school.

We’ve developed a series of posts and images that you can use around the September theme: Spotlight on the Arts.  Use of the California State PTA Social Media kit is optional and fully customizable, so we hope you will find it useful.
